Illegal trafficking in arms and ammunition has persisted in Guatemala because of historical, social, and economic factors that weaken border controls and encourage the circulation of weapons. This phenomenon is aggravated by the porous borders with Mexico, Honduras, El Salvador, and Belize, which facilitate the movement of arms. These weapons originate in former military stockpiles or are acquired abroad and enter the country through traditional smuggling routes. Growing demand from criminal groups, particularly drug trafficking organizations, further aggravates the situation because they seek weapons both to maintain territorial control and to confront State security forces. Differences in firearms legislation among the countries of the region further complicate the problem and create a lucrative cross-border market. Corruption within the institutions responsible for border control also contributes to the proliferation of criminal networks that operate with impunity. Despite local and international efforts to combat arms trafficking, insufficient interinstitutional coordination and weak control mechanisms hinder its eradication. Guatemala has consequently become a strategic hub for arms trafficking in Central America, with adverse effects on national and regional security.
