Un'opera sicuramente non galateana: L'Elogio di Giannozzo Manetti

The aim of the essay is to eliminate any residual hypothesis of the belonging to Antonio De Ferrariis Galateo of the Elogio (Praise) by Giannozzo Manetti, one of the best known Florentine humanists, also active in the Aragonese court of Naples. The attribution dates back to a usually correct repertoire, the "Library of vulgarizers" by Filippo Argelati, published in Milan in 1767, and it had never been rejected, with the risk of misleading Galateo's scholars. Through a correct reading of the card present in Argelati's text and a careful analysis of the pages in which it was printed, the author reaches the conclusion that the error is not to be attributed to the compilers of the work, but to the publisher Federico Agnelli, who in the course of the pagination of the book moved the card, from one page to another, inadvertently and with some superficiality, making it slip from Gaddi, the true author, to Galateo, which is in reality completely extraneous to the Elogio. The case can be taken as an example of the difficulties that can be encountered in the course of a bibliographic research.
