Occurrence records of different mammal species from several localities in Kenya

Many sighting observations of Kenyan mammal species are captured in various literature both in print and electronic media, peer-reviewed articles, various websites, and individuals field observations notebooks. However, few of these records have ever been digitized and published for use by scientific community. We reviewed websites, books and retrieved data from our field notebooks observations of medium and large sized mammals and compiled this dataset from different localities in 15 counties in Kenya. A total of 1,659 mammal species records, comprising of 156 mammal species were recorded in this analysis represented by 14 mammal orders namely; Cetartiodactyla (Even-toed and whales and dolphins (44 spp.); Order Pholidota (Pangolins–two spp.), Order Hyracoidea (Hyraxes–three spp.), Tubulidentata (Aardvark–one spp.), Carnivora (Carnivores) 29 spp.), Chiroptera (Bats) 8 spp.), Erinaceomorpha (Hedgehogs) 1 spp.), Lagomorpha (Hares) 3 spp.), Macroscelidea (Elephant shrews) 3 spp.), Primates (Wild primates and man) 9 spp.), Proboscidae (African elephants) 1 spp.), Rodentia (Rodents) 42 spp.), Order Perissodactyla (Odd-toed Ungulates–4 spp.) and Soricomorpha (White-toothed shrews (6 spp.). We recommend further review of literature, digitization, and publication of the Kenyan mammal data in order to make such data available for future scientific research.
