Streptococcus pneumoniae strain D39. This strain was used by Avery, Macleod, and McCarty in their landmark study on the role of DNA as the agent of transformation. The previously sequenced Streptococcus pneumoniae strain R6 is an avirulent strain derived from strain D39. This organism will be used for comparative genomics.
