'HiFlo-DAT' Database

‘HiFlo-DAT’ (Himalayan Flood Database) is a bi-lateral (India, UK) contribution to the international disaster risk reduction (DRR) agenda of developing methodologies for the assembly, analysis, and application of disaggregated/ sub-national scale disaster loss data; here for mountain floods in the Kullu and Manali Tehsils, Kullu District, Himachal Pradesh, India. Encompassing 3561 km² or c. 0.67% of the Indian Himalayan Region.The 'HiFlo-DAT' architecture is aligned to international best practice and local needs. It uses English-language documentary materials, principally newspapers and government reports (1835-2020), and after rigorous processing comprises 128 flood (F) events, at 59 locations, over 175 years (1846-2020).For accessibility 'HiFlo-DAT' is shared as an English language MS Excel © spreadsheet for textual data. These comprise a rawer ‘unmerged sheet’ (i.e., source data entry of individual sources) and a refined ‘merged sheet’ (i.e., flood event synthesis from one or more sources, providing F events). The merged sheet provides the basis of our wider analysis and communication.
