This project aims to identify the key organisms that contribute to the stability and performance of different-sized aggregates in AGS wastewater treatment plants that treat municipal wastewater. The focus is on understanding the core microbial community, which includes the most abundant and preserved organisms within flocs (less than 0.2 mm), small granules (0.2 to 0.5 mm), medium granules (0.5 to 1 mm), and large granules (greater than 1 mm). To achieve this, mixed liquor samples were collected from 13 WWTPs across 5 countries in Europe. These samples were categorized by aggregate size, and the microbial communities were analyzed using 16S rRNA sequencing.
