Greenhouse horticulture

Greenhouse horticulture is a form of protected cultivation where a greenhouse is used where glass (or some plastics) forms the barrier between the outdoor air, an uncontrollable atmosphere and the controllable air in the building. This allows flowers and vegetables to be grown under conditions that are beneficial for those plants. Glass is used because it allows sunlight to pass through, essential for the growth of the plants. In Overijssel, greenhouse horticulture is concentrated in the Koekoekspolder. The Koekoekspolder is an area of approximately 500 ha. in the municipality of Kampen, where there is room for approximately 250 ha. greenhouses.
