Synthetic Politainment in Europe: Dataset of AI-Generated Political Content on Instagram and TikTok

This dataset contains N = 677 posts incorporating generative artificial intelligence (GenAI), published between 1 January and 30 June 2026 by 56 official political party and political leader accounts from 17 European countries. The sample includes content published on Instagram and TikTok by political actors from Austria, Belgium, Denmark, Finland, France, Germany, Greece, Hungary, Ireland, Italy, the Netherlands, Norway, Poland, Portugal, Spain, Switzerland, and the United Kingdom. Additionally, the dataset includes a comparison sample of N = 2,750 posts without GenAI, collected from the same accounts during the same period. Each post has been coded according to a set of variables relating to the sender, country, platform, formal characteristics of the posts, indicators of synthetic politainment, discursive variables, and engagement metrics. The dataset was compiled to support research on the use of generative artificial intelligence in political communication and the emergence of synthetic politainment on social media.
