Lab 3 : Techniques & data: field training with plants (transects)

The experiment was conducted in Saywell Woodlot, York University in September 23, 2014 between 2:30 to 5:30 pm. A 30 meter transect tape was laid in straight line from North edge of woodlot towards the center (south). 10 adult trees within 5 meters (east and west of the transect tape) were observed and grouped into 5 pairs. For each pair, first tree was called Tree A and second tree was called Tree B. Their diameters at breast height and the distance between them were measured in meters using a transect tape. The conditions of the trees were also visually observed and recorded: 0 being dead, 1 being living and 2 being huge canopy. The tree was considered to be an adult if it was appoximately double the height of the observer which was 1. 7 meters. Another 30 meters transect tape was placed perpendicularly (West to East) to the initial placement and another 5 pairs of trees were visually observed, and analyzed using the same methods.
