Global 8-Day Canopy Water Content (CWC) Product at 0.05° Resolution Derived from MODIS Using OWAC, 2000–2025

DOI: https://doi.org/10.5281/zenodo.21526046 This dataset provides the global Canopy Water Content (CWC) product derived from MODIS BRDF-corrected reflectance using hybrid retrieval models based on the Optimized Water Absorption Coefficient (OWAC). The product has a spatial resolution of 0.05 degree and a temporal resolution of 8 days, covering the period from 2000 to 2025. OWAC was optimized using global TROPOMI sun-induced chlorophyll fluorescence (SIF) observations. The final CWC product was calculated by averaging the estimates derived from OWAC₁₆₄₀ and OWAC₂₁₃₀. Data characteristics Variable: Canopy Water Content (CWC) Unit: kg/m² Data type: single (float32) Invalid values: All NaN values are invalid, mainly due to cloud and snow contamination, insufficient valid observations, or retrieval failure. Spatial resolution: 0.05 degree Temporal resolution: 8-day composite, with 46 composites per year Temporal extent: 2000–2025 Spatial extent:Latitude: 90°N to 60°SLongitude: 180°W to 180°ERows: 3000; Columns: 7200 Projection: Regular geographic latitude–longitude grid File format and naming The data are provided in NetCDF format. Each annual file is named using the format: YYYY.nc, where YYYY is the corresponding year. Each file contains one CWC variable with dimensions of 3000 × 7200 × 46, representing rows, columns, and 8-day composite periods, respectively. Application This dataset is suitable for global-scale vegetation water-status assessment, drought monitoring, crop and forest condition evaluation, and terrestrial carbon–water cycle studies.
