Comparison of spatial orientation with different maps and user navigational strategies in virtual environment

Topographic maps and orthophotomaps are the basic cartographic backgrounds in widely used navigation aids. Therefore, their influence on the process of spatial orientation should be investigated. In addition, visual and map use strategies need to be investigated to deepen the understanding of users' preferences and the differences between them in terms of navigation. We conducted a study in which the participants’ task was a wayfinding in a virtual environment. Data was collected on eye tracking, reaction and map use. Virtual environments are a practical research tool and technological advances may increase their importance in conducting studies. Furthermore, their growing role in games and daily life may increase their importance.
