Currently in vitro maturation (IVM) yields lower quality oocytes than in vivo maturation. This is largely due to damage caused by reactive oxidative species (ROS). Melatonin is a well characterized antioxidant that has been used successfully to protect oocytes from ROS during IVM, thereby improving their maturation quality and developmental ability. However, the molecular mechanisms that modulate the melatonin effects on oocytes during IVM are still poorly understood. Here, we used single cell RNA-seq to determine the effect of melatonin on the mRNA transcriptome in bovine oocytes during IVM.
