We introduce a method to efficiently capture metastable intermediates during self-assembly process based on the photopolymerization strategy of diacetylene. Using perylene diimide with dicaetylene, metastable intermediates including nanoribbon, nanocoils could be captured by light induced polymerization before thermodynamically stable nanotube formed.
