Pathogenic germline mitochondrial genome (mtDNA) mutations cause debilitating and often fatal diseases in children. Mitochondrial replacement therapies (MRT) circumventing mother to child transmission involve replacement of mutant mtDNA in oocytes with donor mitochondria followed by in vitro fertilization (IVF). We report here for the first time, MRT and IVF outcomes in families carrying pathogenic mtDNA mutations.
