In this study, researchers conducted multiple surface soil sampling surveys along different elevation gradients on Taibai Mountain, the main peak of the Qinling Mountains in the semi-arid region. It was found that leaf wax δ²Hwax values and MBT`5ME derived from brGDGTs vary significantly with altitude. Specifically, the coupled δ²Hwax-MBT`5ME index effectively improves the altitude prediction accuracy: R² = 0.96, compared with R² = 0.82 and 0.90; RMSE = 230 m, compared with RMSE = 275 m and 360 m. Subsequently, the researchers applied this method to the Qinghai-Tibet Plateau for validation, and also found that the δ²Hwax-MBT`5ME index can effectively enhance the prediction accuracy. Therefore, the δ²Hwax-MBT`5ME index can effectively serve as a proxy for paleoaltimetry reconstruction in arid and semi-arid regions.
