Enigma of Soma: A Multidisciplinary Study of Ritual Pharmacology, Consciousness, and Civilizational Heritage Description : Soma, revered in over 120 Rigvedic hymns and echoed as Haoma in the Avestan tradition, remains one of the most profound enigmas of ancient intellectual history. This multidisciplinary dissertation explores Soma not as a single botanical entity but as a complex pharmacotechnical artifact at the intersection of ritual, pharmacology, metaphysics, and social order. Employing philology, archaeology, ethnobotany, pharmacognosy, computational modeling, sociology, and heritage studies, this research reconstructs Soma as a synergistic ritual brew comprising Ephedra, Cannabis, and Peganum harmala, integrated with chanting and sacrifice for consciousness regulation. The study reveals Soma’s dual nature as both psychoactive nectar and metaphysical principle of immortality (Ānanda-rasa), woven into Vedic cosmology and social ethics. Archaeological and chemical residue analyses from Indus Valley and Bactria–Margiana support the polyherbal hypothesis. Computational docking elucidates molecular synergy across adrenergic, serotonergic, and endocannabinoid pathways. A global comparative framework situates Soma among sacred elixirs like Greek Kykeon and Amazonian Ayahuasca, emphasizing its civilizational significance. Policy-oriented chapters address contemporary heritage protection under the Nagoya Protocol, India's Traditional Knowledge Digital Library, and UNESCO Intangible Cultural Heritage frameworks, advocating against biopiracy and promoting ethical custodianship. Philosophically, this work situates Soma as an early neurotechnology and social contract mechanism, harmonizing consciousness, ritual, and governance. This thesis advances understanding of Soma as an enduring ritual technology of transcendence and collective identity, embodying India’s unique legacy and humanity's universal quest for immortality and cosmic order.
