Trichodesmium has an unusually high percentage of non-coding nucleotides in its genome (40%). Further, it is ecologically successful and versatile in its marine habitat. We hypothesize that the non-coding fraction has a relevance for this success. We created a genome wide map of transcription start sites (active promoters) under standard cultivation conditions. With our data, we can explain a large fraction of the non-coding space in Trichodesmium.
