Māori Electorates 2014
MED2014_V1_00 is the definitive set of Māori electoral district boundaries as defined by the Electoral Commission as at 17 April 2014. Land Information New Zealand (LINZ) and Statistics New Zealand are the custodians. These districts comprise the Māori electoral districts as constituted under the Electoral Act 1993. Māori electorate boundaries are defined at meshblock level. The number of Māori electoral districts, and electoral populations for each electorate,is controlled by criteria in the Electoral Act. Within these criteria, when setting the boundaries, the Representation Commission also consider the existing boundaries of the Māori electoral districts, community of interest among the Māori people generally and members of iwi, facilities of communications, topographical features, and any projected variation in the Māori electoral population of those districts during their existence. The Representation Commission is convened by the Surveyor-General every five years, following a population census and Māori Electoral Option. Its role is to re-draw electoral boundaries to follow prescribed population quotas. Māori electoral districts are reviewed and redrawn after the Census of Population and Dwellings is undertaken. These boundaries are then used for the next two general elections Māori electoral district is a flat classification and contains 7 Māori electoral districts, there are 8 Māori electoral districts including 1 Māori electoral district classified as "Area Outside Māori Electoral District'. The following table lists the 2014 Māori electoral districts: Māori electoral district code Māori electoral district label 1 Hauraki-Waikato 2 Ikaroa-Rāwhiti 3 Tāmaki Makaurau 4 Te Tai Hauāuru 5 Te Tai Tokerau 6 Te Tai Tonga 7 Waiariki 9 Area Outside Māori Electoral District Māori electoral district boundaries are defined at meshblock level. Digital boundary data became freely available on 1 July 2007. ArcGIS and MapInfo formats do not support the use of macrons.
