Within the Siphini tribe, pseudogenisation of the biotin and riboflavin biosynthetic genes in the Siphini's Buchnera last common ancestor rendered Buchnera unable to supply these essential nutrients to the aphid, and thus triggered the establishment of a secondary co-obligate endosymbiont. Through whole-genome sequencing, we determined that Chaetosiphella stipae setosa apparently harbours a Serratia symbiotica symbiont as Buchnera's co-obligate endosymbiont. This population was also found to be infected by a other likely facultative symbionts.
