The study was aimed at identifying the permanent changes that occur in the Staphylococcus aureus genome when bacteria are exposed to the host defense mechanisms at the site of infection, where they adapt to the changing conditions in the shift from acute to chronic osteomyelitis. Such knowledge would allow the identification of novel approaches to prevention and treatment by identifying key virulence factors and regulators of virulence factor expression that play a decisive role in S. aureus infections.
