Irish and the Ordnance Survey Letters – Dialects, Accent Features, and Levels of Irish

'Irish and the Ordnance Survey Letters – Dialects, Accent Features, and Levels of Irish' is a dataset of information about Irish in the various townlands and parishes visited during the Ordnance Survey of Ireland in the 1830s and 1840s, aiming to create a snapshot of dialects, accent features, and levels of Irish still spoken, where it had disappeared, or the encroachment of English. The data is taken from the Ordnance Survey Letters which the scholars of the Topographical Section sent while they were out in the field collecting place names. The Letters consulted are the O'Flanagan transcriptions, which were published in the 1930s. This was made possible by the digitisation of them as part of the OS200 Ireland Mapped project. The originals are in the possession of the Royal Irish Academy Library, who made the digitisation possible.
