Eppur Non Si Ricorda: A Deep Philosophical Scrutiny of Digital Academic Reception

In Galileo's time, the Catholic Church held the authority to determine which propositions about the Earth and the universe could be accepted as true. The institutional locus of that authority was religious; the political weight that backed it was the political weight of the era. Today, the institutional locus of comparable authority is the academy — its journals, its review processes, its question-and-answer platforms, its discussion forums, its repositories. The political weight that backs it is no longer religious but economic and professional: scientific consensus is also career, also funding, also policy. Accepting a refutation of an officially sanctioned theory has never been only a scientific matter, and is not one now. The mechanisms by which the Church contained heterodox reception were physical and public — they operated on bodies, books, and pulpits in the shared spaces of the day. The mechanisms by which contemporary scientific institutions handle the reception of heterodox propositions operate in a different medium. Digital channels host the bulk of contemporary scientific conversation, and the architectures of those channels admit several distinct modes by which a contribution can be brought, framed, redirected, attenuated, or moved out of public view. The modes are different from each other, the platforms are differently structured, and the resulting patterns are differently legible to outside observers. This paper is a philosophical and structural examination of how heterodox propositions are received on contemporary digital academic platforms — physics question-and-answer sites, scientific discussion forums, deposit repositories, peer-review journals, and community servers. The empirical material is drawn from a documented corpus of submission cycles across these venues between 2024 and 2026. The analytical work organizes the observed reception patterns under a unifying axis (the Content Danger Threshold) and a catalog of thirty-four named mechanisms across seven hierarchical tiers, with operational definitions and empirical anchors. A companion chapter treats the dissenter's epistemic-defensive position in such environments; a supplementary case examines a non-digital paradigm instance (the Zelensky / Oval Office incident of February 2025) where the same tactical structure operates in a setting that does not permit administrative removal. The paper does not argue that institutional control of scientific knowledge is new. It argues that the medium has changed, that the change has produced specific architectural mechanisms not yet adequately named in the philosophy-of-science literature, and that the mechanisms are documentable with the same rigor that earlier centuries' historians applied to the institutional handling of Copernicus, Galileo, and Bruno.
