The Broad Institute sequenced the Ustilago maydis strain 521 genome at 10X coverage using whole genome shotgun (WGS) sequencing. Version 1 of the genome assembly consists of 274 nuclear genome contigs in 47 scaffolds, and 2 mitochondrial genome contigs; it excludes ribosomal RNA genes and very highly conserved repetitive sequence. The genome assembly was annotated using automated gene prediction tools, and the predicted gene models were manually refined. To validate their genome assembly and to anchor the scaffolds to chromosomes, the Broad Institute aligned their WGS assembly to the strain 521 clone-based assembly provided by Bayer CropScience. The Broad Institute also aligned their strain 521 WGS assembly to the Ustilago maydis strain FB1 assembly to identify single nucleotide polymorphisms between these two strains.
