Indonesia Social and Economic Survey (Susenas 2002) is a nationwide survey conducted to collect information on social and economics indices. It serves as a main source of monitoring of social and economic progress in the society. Susenas was conducted on an annual basis since 1963. In 1992, in addition to a basic social and economic questionnaire (core), another questionnaire was introduced which gathers more detailed information on special interest topics (module). The core covers basic household and individual characteristics including health, death, education/literacy, employment, fertility and family planning, housing, and household expenditure. This questionnaire is asked annually with only slight modifications in subsequent years. Susenas 2002 core covers 214,144 households and is designed to be representative up to district/municipality levels except for Aceh, Maluku, North Maluku and Irian Jaya, where data is collected at few cities due to security reasons. The module is intended to gather more detailed information on specific topics, especially on data that changes less frequently than yearly. There are three modules of Susenas and each module is added in a three-year cycle. In 2002, the module's topic was consumption. It collected information on characteristics of consumption and expenditure by the household on food and non-food consumption, and included income. The module covered about 64,422 households (as a subset of the core survey), and was representative at a provincial level for all provinces except Aceh, Maluku, North Maluku and Irian Jaya. Both core and module questionnaires collect data on household and individual characteristics. In the archive deposit, Susenas 2002 core was divided into two data files containing household and individual characteristics, respectively (study IDs 01067 and 01184 respectively). Susenas 2002 module data were split into four main data files, which contain information on Consumption of Food, Beverages, and Tobacco (study ID 01185), Non-food Expenditure (study ID 01186), Aggregate Monthly Expenditure (study ID 01187), and Income and Non-consumption Expenditure (study ID 01188). Merging among data files of Susenas 2002 is possible using following key variables: province, district/city, sub district, village, sample code and household code (and household member code for individual level data). The present data file - Individual Characteristics (Core) - contains individual data gathered from core questionnaires. It includes information about identification of place, household member characteristics, health, health of children under five, education, employment, and fertility and family planning.
