Synovial tissue samples were collected from 52 patients with prosthetic joint infection and 57 aseptic loosening patients at the time of the surgical procedure. They were immediately transported to a microbiology laboratory under sterile conditions for metagenomic analysis. The diagnostic performance and overall pathogen-detection rate were compared between metagenomics and culture-dependent approaches.
