Neo Plastic Jewellery Artefacts

BACKGROUND The influence of traditional and contemporary Japanese iconography stems from Bastin's 2005 Australia Council residency in Tokyo, while his materiality choices are an ongoing study of combining traditional and modern components and manufacture seamlessly. This collection of Neo Plastic Jewellery Artefacts furthers an exploration of the relationship between the macro- and micro-world in creating objects that can be equally personal decoration or precious ornament as artefact. CONTRIBUTION These works use contemporary jewellery making to create new narratives that suggest science fiction influences through the temporal ambiguity of the fictional origin of the work. This project was also about combining aspects of jewellery with miniature objects, belonging to both contemporary and historical Japanese culture, to create a personal type of object mode in response to the current wave of influence of Japanese popular culture on western taste. SIGNIFICANCE By Example was part of a biannual series of international jewellery exhibitions hosted by the Museum of Arts & Crafts, Itami. Curators Karin Findeis and Bridie Lander invited Nicholas Bastin, Roseanne Bartly, Susan Cohn, Mari Funaki, Catherine Harrington, Marian Hosking, Sue Lorraine, Leslie Matthews, Sally Marsland, Carlier Makigawa, Gilbert Riedelbauch and Margaret West to each contribute two key works and in turn select two makers with whom they have worked, mentored or formally taught in the past. Thus By Example presents a view of Australian contemporary jewellery through the lens of the processes of learning, drawing attention initially to the transference of knowledge not as a didactic method but through the relationship of mentor and learner. Simultaneously it provides a 'cultural snapshot' of Australian jewellery for an international audience through the work of 42 talented artists and their collection of more than 200 original pieces.研究背景：传统与当代日本意象符号的创作影响源自尼古拉斯·巴斯汀（Nicholas Bastin）2005年在东京的澳大利亚委员会驻留项目，其材质选择则是对无缝融合传统与现代元素及制作工艺的持续探索。本次新造型珠宝制品（Neo Plastic Jewellery Artefacts）系列，进一步探索了宏观与微观世界的关联，旨在打造兼具个人装饰属性与艺术品珍贵质感的创作载体。研究贡献：本系列作品运用当代珠宝制作工艺，借由作品虚构起源的时间模糊性，营造出受科幻创作影响的全新叙事氛围。本项目同时融合珠宝与微型物件的创作特质，结合当代与历史日本文化元素，打造个性化的器物形态，以呼应当下日本流行文化对西方审美思潮的影响。研究意义：《以身为范》（By Example）是伊丹市工艺美术博物馆（Museum of Arts & Crafts, Itami）主办的双年度国际珠宝展系列活动之一。策展人卡琳·芬戴斯（Karin Findeis）与布里德·兰德（Bridie Lander）邀请了尼古拉斯·巴斯汀、罗珊·巴特利（Roseanne Bartly）、苏珊·科恩（Susan Cohn）、玛丽·福纳基（Mari Funaki）、凯瑟琳·哈灵顿（Catherine Harrington）、玛丽安·霍斯金（Marian Hosking）、苏·洛兰（Sue Lorraine）、莱斯利·马修斯（Leslie Matthews）、萨莉·马斯兰（Sally Marsland）、卡利尔·牧川（Carlier Makigawa）、吉尔伯特·里德尔鲍赫（Gilbert Riedelbauch）以及玛格丽特·韦斯特（Margaret West），要求每位创作者提交两件代表性作品，并各自挑选两位曾与其合作、受其指导或正式受教过的创作者参与本次展览。因此，《以身为范》以学习传承过程为视角，展现了澳大利亚当代珠宝艺术的风貌：其核心并非以说教式的方式传递知识，而是聚焦于师徒间的知识传承关系。与此同时，本次展览集结了42位杰出艺术家的200余件原创作品，为国际观众呈现了澳大利亚珠宝艺术的‘文化快照’。
