In a-NiP/NiCo2O4@CC (NNCOC) electrode obtained by the electrodeposition method, the introduction of the crystalline-amorphous composite catalyst not only significantly increases the open pores and active sites on the surface of the carbon cloth fibers, but also enables it to retain the excellent redox properties of the NiCo2O4@CC (NCOC) electrode. Among the four groups of microbial fuel cells (MFCs) for treating aged landfill leachate, the NNCOC-MFC exhibits the best power generation and degradation performance, with a maximum steady-state output voltage and power density of 637 mV and 1231.6 mW/m2, respectively, which are significantly larger than that of the blank carbon cloth anode MFC (CC-MFC) (468.7 mV and 195.3 mW/m2). Microbial community analysis shows that the species composition on the biofilm of the NNCOC electrode is richer, containing microorganisms specific to both the NCOC and the a-NiP@CC (NPC) electrode, which promotes synergistic interactions among the strains and enhances the degradation and energy conversion capabilities of the NNCOC-MFC for aged landfill leachate.
