Data description (v1): This archive contains the data and R code used to reproduce the cropland nitrogen (N) surplus trend analysis for Europe. The dataset covers EU27 plus Norway, Switzerland and the United Kingdom for the period 1991-2020. It includes annual cropland N-balance components, decadal trend estimates and component contribution tables used to assess changes in cropland N surplus across Europe. The analysis-ready input data include synthetic fertilizer N input, animal manure N input, biological N fixation, atmospheric N deposition, harvested crop N output and cropland area. The R scripts calculate annual cropland N surplus, estimate decade-specific trends for 1991-2000, 2001-2010 and 2011-2020, and quantify the relative contribution of individual N-balance components to N surplus trends.
