VPRS 10699 Default Registers

This series consists of the Default Registers for the Melbourne Magistrates Court.These are Court of Petty Sessions registers devoted entirely to cases relating to Default Summonses. Individuals are most usually being summoned by business firms. Debts for which the defendants are being summonsed are for goods and chattels sold and delivered, work and labour done, money due on a cheque and the use and hire of chattels.Details recorded are names of complainant and defendant, how before the court (default summons), fees, charge, cause or proceeding, decision or order and remarks.A consignment of registers from this series spanning the period 1923 - 1963 was appraised as temporary, deaccessioned and returned to the custody of the Melbourne Magistrates Court pending eventual disposal.
