VPRS 12636 File Registration Cards: Multiple Number System

This series was created to register the files created under the multiple number filing system. A card was raised for each secondary heading. All files created under each secondary heading were listed on the one card.The information recorded on the cards included:Primary heading and primary numberSecondary heading and secondary numberTertiary numberFile title.Tertiary numbers were allocated to new files at the time of registration of the file. The next available number in sequence on a particular card was used as the tertiary number for the newly registered file. The complete file number had three parts derived from the primary and secondary heading numbers with the tertiary number being the third element.
