VPRS 12664 Register of Shire and District Works

Under the Local Government Act 1863, road districts and shires were given recognition as being the mediums of local government with the delineation of their rights, powers, modes of proceedings and responsibilities. Roads and bridges, including main roads, within the municipality were to become the responsibility of the district or shire. District boards were to construct and maintain main roads following the issuing of an Order-in-Council and if a plan had been deposited with and approved by the Board of Land and Works. If the proper completion of the work was able to be certified, a payment would be made to the district from that portion of the consolidated revenue known as the Main Road Construction Fund.The Department of Roads and Bridges (VA 2964) and its successor agencies were the operative areas relating to the Board of Land and Works (VA 744) in relation to the construction and maintenance of roads and bridges.This series records and summarises the works done under these provisions of the 1863 Local Government Act. Details include the Shire or District, the Locality and Nature of the Works, Dates relating to passing the Boards approval, that of the Order, of completion and certification and the nature and amount of the work certified. A record number is given which was the Boards office reference to the application. Most of the works recorded are for the Western region of Victoria. Works which the Board of Land and Works had to give formal approval to before their execution may be found listed with other business of the Board in VPRS 1112 Schedule of Authorities and other Correspondence for the Consideration of the Board.Within VPRS 12664/P1 unit 1 is included the summary details of a number of road maintenance contracts let in the Ballarat region.VPRS 12664/P1 was formerly registered as Unit 14 of VPRS 1108 Contract Book.
