Newspaper Reference Data on Development and Ecological Change in Tanzania, 1965-1985

This dataset contains reference information for newspaper articles on development policies and planned sustainability communities instituted in Tanzania between 1965 to 1985. The dataset also contains quantitative content analysis data related to the frequency and distribution of articles across key concepts and ideologies about societal reorganization, and the political, ecological, and economic transformations that endured in Tanzania’s immediate post-independence era. The dataset does not provide the actual articles themselves as the historical articles are copyrighted material. Creating a dataset of newspaper reference information is essential for various research and practical purposes. Particularly as it relates to Tanzania’s Ujamaa development policy during the mid-1960s to mid-1980s, the dataset offers insights into historical, social, and political contexts that enable researchers to track the evolution of news coverage and public discourse over time. This dataset further supports the analysis of the evolution of media perspective on the Ujamaa policies and communities. This allows for the identification of trends and patterns in public discourse on topics of interest or historical significance. The dataset also contains reference information on news articles that cover inter-state conflicts, tribal politics, and social, economic, environmental, and diplomatic issues related to Tanzania at that time. This dataset could help researchers quickly locate news articles when searching the archives of news companies or major third-party digital archives/repositories such as ProQuest, which helps academic research and media literacy education. It can also be used to develop search algorithms and natural language processing models, enhancing information retrieval and analysis in various digital archives. The dataset also provides analyzed data from a content analysis aimed at deducing eco-conscious best practices (or lessons) on how to approach present and future green transitions and sustainability in Africa, using the Ujamaa development experiment as a case study. This contributes to a further understanding through public and news-media history of Tanzania’s Ujamaa development policy and its implications for future sustainable development agendas in Africa.

The Newspaper_Reference_Data.zip consists of the following files:

1) Newspaper_Reference_Data_Master_2024.xlsx: provides all the reference information for newspaper articles and coding, as well as the input data variables and analysis results for the archival search and related content analysis.

2) Data_Description_2024.pdf: describes the data, rationale, and value of the newspaper sources referenced in the dataset.

3) Methodology_Description_2024.pdf: describes the quantitative content analysis method conducted on the newspaper sources.
