ImageCong: The Image Dataset with Religious Buildings in the Historic Town of Congonhas (Brazil) for Deep Learning Classification

Historic Town of Congonhas: The Historic Town of Congonhas preserves an important cultural heritage composed of buildings from the Brazilian colonial period, particularly from the 18th century. Congonhas is located in the state of Minas Gerais, Brazil, a region renowned for its significant religious art and architecture in Baroque and Rococo styles. In this context, the Historic Town of Congonhas stands out for the integrity and originality of its prominent religious monuments.

The Sanctuary of Bom Jesus represents the most important cultural heritage building in Congonhas. The characteristics of originality, authenticity, and integrity led to the designation of the Sanctuary of Bom Jesus as a federal historical site in 1939 by the National Institute of Historical and Artistic Heritage (IPHAN). Subsequently, in December 1985, the Sanctuary of Bom Jesus in the Historic Town of Congonhas was recognized as a UNESCO World Heritage Site.

Data Collection: the data collection process was conducted through photographic documentation of monuments in the Historic Town of Congonhas. Accordingly, a Kodak PIXPRO AZ255 digital camera was used to photograph four architectural ensembles of religious buildings in February 2025:

1) Church of Our Lady of Solitude.
2) Church of Our Lady of Conception.
3) Church of Saint Joseph.
4) Sanctuary of Bom Jesus (UNESCO World Heritage Site) and chapels attached to the complex.

Dataset: ImageCong consists of 611 photographs gathered from four religious buildings. Five categories were considered for classification: fronton, church, window, door, and tower.

The images are labeled in two folders Validationcong and Testcong according to the religious building photographed:
1) Validationcong: Church of Our Lady of Solitude, Church of Our Lady of Conception, and Church of Saint Joseph.
2) Testcong: Sanctuary of Bom Jesus (UNESCO World Heritage Site) and chapels attached to the complex.

Additionally, the images are available in two resolutions:
a) Low resolution: 150 x 150.
b) High resolution: 4608 x 3456.
