Escherichia coli genome sequencing

Multidrug resistance in gram-negative bacteria, especially for carbapenem-resistant Enterobacteriaceae, presents a particularly critical problem in China. Tigecycline and colistin are considered as the only available active antimicrobials for carbapenemase-producing Enterobacteriaceae. However, the plasmid-mediated colistin resistance gene, mcr-1, was identified in Enterobacteriaceae, with a prevalence of around 20% in animal and around 1% in human clinical isolates in China. Two E. coli isolates co-harboring NDM-5 and mcr-1 were detected in clinical setting. This project aims to describe the genome structure of mcr-1-harboring and NDM-5-harboring plasmids.
