VPRS 3995 Political Dismissals Of 1878

This series consists of a list of persons dismissed from the Public Service during the political crisis of 1878. In this crisis, the Legislative Council blocked supply to the Government leading to proposals to alter the Constitution Act to better define the powers of the Houses of Parliament and the Governor. Further records of this political crisis may be found in VPRS 4062 Crisis Minute Book.Details given are: the names and departments of people dismissed, their status or class and salary, years of service and date of discharge in 1878, the date of reappointment if they were reappointed, any compensation paid or pension granted or reduction on reappointment, whether the person had applied for reappointment and the nature of any request preferred. A remarks column allowed the insertion of notes regarding such matters as salaries and eligibility for reappointment.It is uncertain whether this series was created by the Chief Secretary's Office, or the Public Service Board or the Premier's Department.
