Verso una teoria della traduzione multimediale. Una definizione di media

Multimedia studies, which arose in the early 1990s in response to the development of the new media society, sought throughout the decade to elaborate a theory of this new discipline. Since the beginning of the century, however, the theoretical-methodological investigation has in fact stopped on the concept of multimodal, which has gradually replaced the term multimedia, while research has focused on concrete applications, especially in the audiovisual field. While acknowledging the importance of the theoretical and practical studies carried out so far, the author argues that a real multimedia theory does not yet exist, as there is no clear and unambiguous definition of the object of study: the current definitions of multimodal (Kress and Van Leeuwen, Baldry, Thibault, Taylor) do not in fact allow to distinguish it from the concept of monomodal, while the audiovisual does not cover all the possible expressions of multimedia. The author, reworking and integrating the contributions of various scholars (Ejzenštejn, Cosenza, Forceville), proposes a definition of multimedia, as a base for a new theory of multimedia translation. The article also introduces the concept of hypostasis, in addition to those of mode and media, in order to create a typologization of the different phenomena of this discipline.
