Embedded Visualisations for Real-time Crane Lift Operations

Crane lifts are inherently high-risk, with accident rates that continue to be a concern. Existing onboard computers struggle to support operators with the growing complexity of modern lifts. This research explores augmented reality overlays in the form of embedded visualisations that place key cues within the operator’s typical view, supporting spatial awareness and decision making. Industry experts helped shape designs through iterations in a realistic, virtual reality environment. The outcome is a real-time assistant that supports safer, quicker lifts and a practical framework for building, evaluating, and deploying similar systems.
