Polytechnical Dictionary (1946) from the joint library of Uryvaev L. V., MD., and his wife, Uryvaeva I.V., D.Biol.: a PDF dataset of ownership marks and use evidence

Description in English This dataset comprises PDF compilations of photographs documenting ownership marks and use evidence from a rare 1946 copy of the Brief Anglo‑Russian Polytechnical Dictionary, which was passed down by inheritance and remarcably well preserved. The edition belonged to the spouses‑scientists Leonid Viktorovich Uryvaev, MD. (1939-2026; Scopus ID: 7006016398; ORCID ID: 0000-0002-2556-4924), and his wife, Irina Vasilyevna Uryvaeva, D.Biol. (1939-2020; Scopus ID: 7006010900). The rarity of the edition, combined with its exceptional state of preservation and the family‑heirloom provenance, significantly increases the value of these material traces: the collection captures key artefactual evidence of scholarly practice that would otherwise be inaccessible to researchers. It includes handmade alphabetical dividers, and close‑ups of paper yellowing, edge wear, and creases. Scale photographs are included to enable accurate measurement and comparative analysis. Structured by artefact type (dividers, bookmarks, wear patterns), the PDFs allow targeted examination without requiring full‑book scans. The collection supports quantitative and qualitative studies of material book culture, including classification of marking systems, wear pattern analysis, and reconstruction of Soviet‑era research workflows. Intended for research in the history of science, book history, and the history of medical education, the dataset is also suitable for teaching: it provides concrete examples for seminars on scholarly reading practices, language learning strategies, and the material culture of science. Original JPG images are retained in the curator’s local archive; the repository hosts optimised PDFs for citation, teaching, and research reuse. Works from the 1940s–1980s included are considered to be in the public domain. The collection showcases ownership and use marks as historical evidence, not as a means of commercial text distribution.
