When asked about the manufacture of indigo vats, THH explains that he does not know much about them because neither his generation nor that of his parents made them. He also does not know who made them. Even if he were provided with all the necessary ingredients, he claims to be unable to build one. When asked how dyers who open a new workshop should proceed, when they do not have the waste from a vat, he believes that there is simply no way: without an old vat and without the waste that is taken from it, there is no way to prepare an indigo dye bath.
