Two Bifidobacterium pseudocatenulatum strains were supplemented separately to mice while paired with a human milk oligosaccharide (HMO) to test persistence. One of the strains, B. pseudocatenulatum MP80 was capable of in vitro HMO growth while B. pseudocatentulatum JCM11661 was incapable. This permitted us to test whether a HMO catabolism gene cluster was required for persistence in a mouse.
