A new staphylococcal species isolated from implant-associated infections and blood cultures. Staphylococcus

A previously unrecognized, slow-growing, anaerobic staphylococcal species was identified, isolated from human blood samples and patients with implant-associated infections. Seven strains were genome sequenced. Phylogenomic analyses showed that this newly identified species forms a separate clade within coagulase-negative staphylococci; closest relatives are Staphylococcus saccharolyticus and Staphylococcus capitis with an average nucleotide identity of 80%. We propose to name the new species “Staphylococcus nericia”.
