Knots that Bind: A Queer Investigation of Censorship and Silence through Experimental Opera

This project investigates censorship and silence from a queer lens. An original experimental opera and a series of shorter compositions test the possibilities to embody erased histories, unmask hidden thoughts and discover creative expression within complex knots. I investigate recent operas that interrogate these themes and music that challenges conventional forms of notation, developing a queer approach to notating music through light, spatialised audio, textiles and projected bodies. Performance experiments elucidate how we communicate silently in environments of restriction.
