Medicare bulk billing rate and out-of-pocket expenses for GP appointments in Australia (2003-2024)

This dataset explores the costs associated with GP attendance in Australia from 2003-2024, specifically focussing on what percentage of visits were covered by Medicare (bulk billed) and the average out-of-pocket expenses for patients. It also contains data about the Medicare rebate for standard GP appointments during this period and compares the rate at which this fee has increased against the rate of inflation (Consumer Price Index).

This data was used to create the accompanying visualisations in Datawrapper. These visualisations were included in this data story as part of a university assignment.

Data for this dataset has been sourced from the Australian Bureau of Statistics (ABS), Australian Institute of Health and Welfare (AIHW), and the Department of Health and Aged Care (DHAC).
