Athenian memory palace

'The Athenian Memory Palace' is an experimental sound work deconstructed from family archival sound recordings made in Athens in the late 1950s. It responds to the evident international trend of a lack of archival sound usage in creative practices. The field commonly addresses sound as an audiosonic spatial experience but neglects to explore more experimental notions of sound as a communicative device. However, within the philosophical notions of 'post-history', sound can translate the relationship between memory and place. Wilson used an adaptive experimental methodological model to construct a sound work that provides an example of a solution to the problem or sound communicating memory and place. It arrives at a benchmark for the discipline in understanding such a dilemma and as such opens the way for further enquiry and practice.
The work was aired in Athens Greece in June 2007 by ArtWave Radio, the official curated broadcaster of audio works that featured as a component of the internationally significant Athens Biennial 2007.
