CDC NHSN Hospital Respiratory Data (HRD) is a public dataset collected by the U.S. Centers for Disease Control and Prevention (CDC) National Healthcare Safety Network (NHSN), dedicated to hospital-based respiratory disease surveillance. The dataset spans from August 8, 2020 to April 18, 2026, with weekly updates, and contains data at the U.S. national, subnational regional, and state levels, totaling 67 unique location IDs. It covers three primary respiratory pathogens: influenza, SARS-CoV-2 (COVID-19), and RSV. Key data columns include weekly counts of newly laboratory-confirmed influenza, COVID-19, and RSV hospitalizations; bed capacity and occupancy metrics (e.g., total staffed inpatient beds, ICU bed occupancy); numbers of ICU patients; and population-standardized hospitalization rates. Additionally, the dataset provides seasonal cumulative hospitalization counts. Starting from the 2024-25 season, this dataset has functioned as a scoring target for the FluSight Forecast Hub. Data collection was transitioned from voluntary reporting to mandatory reporting in November 2024; thus, researchers should note the change in data collection protocols before and after November 2024 when performing long-term modeling. The dataset also includes explanatory caveats: for instance, bed counts only encompass staffed beds, and RSV data was voluntarily reported prior to Week 46 of 2024 and may be incomplete. This dataset is applicable for respiratory disease trend analysis, predictive model evaluation, and public health surveillance.
