The purpose of this project is to provide an assessmentof the impact of various fuel-saving technologies on a cargoship’s fuel consumption, thus providing the ship owner fundamentaldata indicating which technologies and practiceswarrant further, more detailed investigation. These fuel-savingtechnologies and practices include slow steaming, engine modifications,bulbous bow removal, propeller optimization, andenergy saving devices that modify the hull. The computer codecreated through this project accomplishes a rapid assessmentof a ship’s performance using a small amount of data; itis assumed that the data available for the candidate vesselis insufficiently detailed to accomplish a full computationalfluid dynamics (CFD) analysis, so various standard estimationmethodologies are employed as described herein.Using a small set of input data, this code calculates the shipresistance over a range of speeds, estimates propeller performance,and predicts engine performance, all at design draft.If ballast draft information is provided, similar calculationsare accomplished at ballast condition as well. The code alsoestimates ship performance with the bulbous bow removed,with an energy saving device installed, with various enginemodifications implemented, or with a modified propeller designedfor a different design speed, and with combinations ofthese modifications. The primary metric for comparison is fuelconsumption, both specific fuel consumption and tons per dayfor a given loading condition.This document is arranged as follows. Section II providesan overview of the code structure and input data. SectionsIII through VI provide the theoretical background supportinghull, propeller and engine calculations. Section VII describesthe methodology for assessing ship modifications. Section VIIIdescribes calculations and estimates for data. Examples areprovided in Section IX. A user’s manual is provided in SectionX. Additional discussion of the bulbous bow is provided inthe Appendix, followed by a glossary of terms, symbols andabbreviations.
