Effect of alpha-glycosyl isoquercitrin on learning and memory function via changing the gut microbiome

Alpha-glycosyl isoquercitrin (AGIQ) is composed of isoquercitrin and its glucosylated derivatives and has many biological activities including anti-inflammatory, antioxidant, and anti-cancer properties. However, little is known about the effect of AGIQ on brain function. Here we provided a possibility that AGIQ could change gut microbiota composition and show a good effect on learning and memory function. Male mice received AGIQ (0.05%) in water for 4weeks. Following the treatment, mice were used for behavior tests and fecal samples were collected analyzed using 16S-rRNA gene sequencing. No significant changes were observed in alpha and beta diversity of the gut microbiota. Characteristic bacteria that responded to AGIQ were identified such as Bifidobacterium and Akkermansia, suggesting that it may be related to the biological activities of AGIQ on learning and memory in mice.
