Developing an optogenetic system to study the spatial compartmentalisation of GPCR signalling

This thesis studies the signalling of receptors in the cell that sense signals from the environment. These receptors can produce different signals depending on their location inside the cell, but this is not well understood. To investigate this, this research developed novel light-activated tools to control the activation of these receptors and observe how their location in the cell affects their actions. The results show that the same receptor can change the way it signals depending on its location within the cell. This thesis helps to understand how protein location could contribute to disease, encouraging efforts to develop better treatments for diseases.
