<b>Sarcopenia and frailty syndrome are geriatric conditions that increase illness and death rates among older adults.</b> So far, there are no widely accepted practical methods for early diagnosis of sarcopenia and frailty syndrome. <br>Analyzing the interaction between the genome, epigenome, and phenome—systems that influence aging—may help identify biological markers for sarcopenia and frailty syndrome. This project was needed to address important health and aging-related issues. A total of 204 participants (43 male and 161 female, aged 82.2±7.6 years) were included in this study: 75 healthy community-dwelling older adults (17 male and 58 female, aged 80.2±7.5 years) without sarcopenia and/or frailty (controls); and 122 individuals with sarcopenia and/or frailty (26 male and 95 females, aged 85.3±6.7 years). Genotyping was performed using the Illumina <i>Infinium Global Screening Array-24 v3.0 Kit </i>(Illumina, San Diego, CA, USA), which includes 654,027 genome-wide SNPs. Methylation of a total of 62 subjects (43 females aged 85.5 ± 6.1 and 19 males aged 82.9 ± 8.8) diagnosed by both sarcopenia and frailty were profiled by Illumina Infinium EPICv2 arrays. Relative telomere length was measured by quantitative real-time polymerase chain reaction (qRT-PCR) method and quantified as the telomere/single-copy gene (T/S) ratio (Cawthon, 2002).
