VPRS 12346 Card Register of Business Names

This series was primarily created under the provisions of Section 6 of the Business Names Act 1962 (No. 6853). According to the provisions of the Act, each firm, individual or corporation conducting business within Victoria was required to register their business name when this was not the full give names of the individuals or partners concerned.Each card in this series refers to a single business name registration. When necessary, additional cards were created for a given registration number. Each card records the following information:. firm (business) name. type of business. place or places of business. full name, usual residence and other occupation of the person or persons carrying out the business. date of commencement of the business.The Act provided that each business name be registered through the lodgement of a statement containing the above information. This statement and subsequent documentation lodged relating to changes in these details were attached to a file pertaining to the registration. The cards also record the receipt of this statement and documentation and its placement on file.Accordingly this series controlled the arrangement of the files.Entries on these cards also detail changes to the registration and its cessation or striking off.Commencement of the seriesThese cards replaced the alphabetically arranged card register which was used since 1927. (see VPRS 12343). The date of commencement is unclear, however, the most recent card in that series dates from 1964.Cards relating to current registrations at that time were removed from VPRS 12343 and placed in this series. Consequently this series contains cards relating to:* new registrations from 1964, and* registrations which were current in 1964.End of the seriesIn the early 1980's a computerised system of controlling the Business Names Register and the allocation of registration numbers was introduced. The registration number on all cards in this series from 1977 contain computer check letters, indicating that all registrations for this period were entered into the database as were business names first registered before 1977 and still current when the computerised system was established.The registration of business names at Corporate Affairs is now fully conducted through a computerised database for all types of company registrations. Two computer output microfiche series have been generated from this database. Entries on these microfiche are arranged alphabetically.VPRS 8267/P1 Microfiche Index to Current Company Associations and Business Names RegistrationsVPRS 8268/P1 Microfiche Index to Defunct Company Associations and Business Names Registrations(Both series in archival custody are outputs from the database as at August 1990).As no further cards have been identified beyond No 698,855 in October 1986, it is assumed that all registrations were made on the database from that date.

该法规定，商业名称注册需通过提交包含上述信息的声明书完成。该声明书及后续提交的与登记信息变更相关的文件，均附属于对应登记的档案卷宗。本卡片同时记录该声明书与文件的接收情况，以及其归档情况。因此，本系列卡片承担了该类档案的编排管理职能。卡片条目还可反映登记信息的变更、登记的终止或注销。

本系列的启用
本系列卡片取代了自1927年起使用的按字母顺序编排的卡片登记簿（详见VPRS 12343）。本系列的启用日期尚不明确，但原VPRS 12343系列中最新的卡片日期为1964年。当时仍处于有效期的注册登记对应的卡片从VPRS 12343中移出，归入本系列。因此，本系列包含两类卡片：1964年起新增的注册登记卡片，以及1964年仍处于有效期的原有注册登记卡片。

本系列的终止
20世纪80年代初，澳大利亚引入了计算机化的商业名称登记管理系统及登记编号分配机制。本系列中1977年及之后的卡片，其登记编号均带有计算机校验字母（computer check letters），这表明该时期的所有登记、以及1977年前首次注册且在计算机系统启用时仍有效的商业名称，均已录入数据库。

目前，公司事务署的商业名称登记工作已全面通过计算机化数据库完成，涵盖所有类型的公司登记业务。该数据库生成了两套计算机输出缩微平片（microfiche）系列，其条目均按字母顺序编排：VPRS 8267/P1《现行公司团体与商业名称登记索引》、VPRS 8268/P1《已注销公司团体与商业名称登记索引》。上述两套存档的缩微平片均为1990年8月的数据库导出成果。

截至1986年10月，本系列中未发现编号超过698,855的卡片，因此可认定自该日期起，所有商业名称登记均通过数据库完成。
